For thousands of years, humans have depended on this tropical tree for wood, fiber, and fruit. The earliest Arab spice traders caught the monsoon breeze to India in dhows, made of coconut wood, tied together with coconut cord.
As early as 2000 years ago, traders carried coconuts from India to East Africa; and the name ‘zhawzhat al-hind’ (meaning ‘walnut of India’) survives today in Arabic dialects.
