At Taza Chocolate, we make stone-ground chocolate. Cacao is so complex in flavor that we want to make it scream loud and proud. That’s why we do less to bring you more. We grind organic cocoa beans into perfectly unrefined, minimally processed chocolate with a bold taste and texture, unlike anything you’ve ever tasted.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

Taza founder and CEO Alex Whitmore took his first bite of stone-crushed chocolate while traveling in Oaxaca, Mexico. He was so inspired by the rustic intensity that he decided to create a chocolate factory at home in Somerville, MA. He learned to carve granite millstones by hand to make chocolate that is less processed, so that our Direct Trade cocoa can shine. In 2005, he officially launched Taza with his wife, Kathleen Fulton, who is Taza’s Chief Design Officer and has designed all of the packaging.

Taza is a pioneer in ethical cocoa sourcing. We were the first U.S. chocolate maker to establish a third-party certified Direct Trade Cocoa certification program. We maintain direct relationships with our cocoa farmers and pay a premium above the Fair Trade price for their cocoa. We only work with cocoa producers who respect workers’ rights and the environment
