Baracoa, Guantánamo, Northeast Cuba
Cacao was introduced at the beginning of the 19th century by French settlers fleeing Haiti’s independence revolution. They started growing coffee and cocoa on the island. The introduced breeds are believed to have originated from the Atlantic coast of Mesoamerica.
This cocoa comes from the area of Baracoa in the province of Guantánamo in northeastern Cuba. Baracoa is located on the Bay of Honey (Bahía de Miel) and is surrounded by a wide mountain range (including the Sierra del Purial), making it quite isolated. Baracoa today is not only a region where cocoa is grown, but it is also Cuba’s main chocolate production area.
